AAMI Releases Guide to Prep for CHTM Exam

ARLINGTON, VA—For those looking to join the ranks of the more than 70 certified healthcare technology managers (CHTM) in 2017, AAMI has published a new resource to help guide their exam preparation.

The CHTM Study Guide, written by Patrick K. Lynch, CBET, CCE, CHTM, provides a solid review of the five core topic areas found on the exam: financial management, risk management, operations management, education and training, and human resources. The study guide also includes concise guidance on these core principles, as well as practical examples of sound financial planning, routine documentation, and a quality improvement tool. In addition, the guide lists other valuable resources, including organizations and agencies of importance to healthcare technology managers.

“The CHTM Study Guide should be on the bookshelf or desk of every HTM manager. If you are prepping for the CHTM examination, it will help you find the areas to focus your study efforts. If you are a new or aspiring HTM manager, this guide will serve as a roadmap for those things that the modern HTM manager needs to know,” Lynch said. “Think of it as a boot camp for new managers—a compendium of things that working biomedical engineering technicians need to know to become successful HTM managers.”

The 100-question CHTM exam covers two major areas: the management of healthcare technology operations and the management of personnel. Candidates for the exam are expected to have the skills and understanding needed to perform strategic, business, and change management, as well as handle employee relations.

Boyd M. Hutchins, CBET, CHTM, who helped review the study guide, agrees that the resource has applications beyond just preparing for the CHTM exam.
