AAMI All Star: Louis 'Lou' W. Schonder, Jr., CBET
Director of earthMed in Upper Darby, PA; secretary and treasurer of the Philadelphia Area Medical Instrumentation Association (PAMIA)
AAMI and PAMIA activities:
The 2007 recipient of the AAMI Foundation & the American College of Clinical Engineering’s Robert L. Morris Humanitarian Award for his volunteer efforts with Project Open Hearts, a nonprofit organization that provided medical professionals with first-hand surgical training and assistance in developing countries. President of PAMIA from 1993–1994 and a member of the PAMIA board of directors since 1991.
Schonder and his colleagues helped revive PAMIA after a nearly decade-long hiatus, soliciting advice from fellow healthcare technology management (HTM) societies to identify the needs of local HTM professionals.
Why did you choose to revive PAMIA now?
“The sole determining factor was the assembling of our team. The will and efforts of our team members are what made this possible: Scott Leshner, Martine Kersaint, Salim Kai, Karen Topping-Sills, Randy Cremer, and Michael Hamid. Reviving PAMIA was always needed, but until some heroes stepped up, it wasn’t going to happen.”
What have the biggest challenges been in reviving the association?
“The main challenge is outreach to local HTM professionals. Many have retired, many have just entered the field, and many have moved to new locations. Our membership database was 10 years old. We are still working to ensure everyone in the Philadelphia area is being reached.”
