Betty Hanna, a sterile processing leader and the former executive director of the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) has passed away.
A founding member of IAHCSMM, when it was known as the National Association of Hospital Central Service, Hanna was considered a “respected pioneer” in her field with a lifetime of service to the sterile processing and central service professions, said Susan Adams, executive director of IAHCSMM.
“She was a staunch advocate for sterile processing and central service certification, education, and advocacy,” Adams said. “In her 48 years as IAHCSMM’s executive director, she remained committed to supporting the discipline and helping spread the word on the importance of CS/SP professionals and their role in patient care.”
Hanna left "an indelible mark" on her field, added Sue Klacik, the IAHCSMM representative on AAMI committees dealing with sterilization standards. "She helped raised the bar for medical device processing and brought together professionals from all related fields through partnerships with vendors, manufacturers, researchers, and related trade associations.”
Hanna retired from IAHCSMM in 2012 to pursue her additional passions for animal advocacy and the arts.
