Tell us a bit about your role and job. What’s the day to day like?
My current role is the vice president of healthcare product marketing at Nuvolo, a CMMS (computerized maintenance management system) provider, but I wear many hats in the company. I was previously the VP of a large HTM department, so I am proof that there are many career paths for people in HTM! My day-to-day involves working with several teams to support the needs of our HTM and healthcare customers. It’s rewarding seeing my suggestions become part of the product and knowing our clients benefit from my HTM expertise.
How did you first get involved in healthcare technology management?
I got involved in HTM totally by chance. I was working as a director of marketing for a small engineering company and came across an ad in the newspaper. The clinical engineering department at SSM Health was looking for a salesperson to sell clinical equipment maintenance services outside the health system. I got the job, started taking on more and more operational roles, and eventually was promoted to vice president of HTM.
What’s an issue in the field that doesn't get enough attention?
If the HTM industry is ever going to significantly evolve, we need to collectively identify modern best practices and performance measurements and adopt them as standards, as well as begin benchmarking to raise the collective bar.
What does every HTM professional need to succeed?
No matter what role you have in HTM, to be successful, you have to have good communication and project management skills, patience, and a commitment to ensuring the medical equipment is safe and reliable. Most importantly, you have to love what you do and be proud of the value you provide your organization and its patients. If you don’t, you’ll never be successful.
What's something small that drives you absolutely nuts?
People who eat or breathe heavily during videoconferences.
What do you like to do for fun?
My son and daughter are now away at college, so I have a lot more “me” time these days and love it. I take the dog for a long walk in the nearby park almost every day before work, and I read every night before bed. My husband and I love entertaining and going out with our friends! We also really enjoy traveling. We bought an older house on four acres “in the country” last December, so I’ve been working on remodeling projects and spending a lot of time doing yard work.
Who is your inspiration?
My father, Jim White. He was a talk show host on KMOX radio and passed away in 2009. He had all these great sayings, like “You can’t fix stupid” and “You can do anything you want, just not all at the same time.” Dad taught me not to take life too seriously and to work hard and have fun.
What’s your favorite medical device?
The ones that are easy to pronounce, like “CT” or “patient monitor.”
The ones I can’t pronounce, like “sphygmomanometers” or “duodenoscopes.” They get me every time.
Where do you hope to be in 10 years?
Working at Nuvolo. It’s a fun company, and it’s growing rapidly.
