New Brochure Published, Promotes Biomed Field as a Rewarding Career

AAMI has created a new brochure to encourage more students to consider the biomedical field as a career option.

The attractive, four-color brochure is designed to help healthcare facilities, schools, biomedical societies, manufacturers, and recruiters attract more biomeds to the field; and is available to all AAMI members who request complimentary copies.

The brochure was created in response to a priority identified by AAMI’s Technology Management Council (TMC) to increase recognition of the field and to help employers who are facing labor shortages.

This “is an excellent tool for recruiting prospective students/professionals into the biomedical field,” says Steven J. Yelton, PE, a TMC member and program chair of the Information and Engineering Technologies Divisions at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. “I also feel that this is an excellent way to educate other medical professionals on the job functions of the biomedical technician.”

The four-page brochure—titled “The Career Opportunity of a Lifetime . . . Servicing Technology that Saves Lives” — provides details about the job functions of biomedical equipment technicians (BMETs), the desired skills and training, salary ranges and other benefits, and the long-term career outlook for BMETs. The brochure also includes several testimonials from working BMETs and encourages interested parties to contact AAMI for more information about educational programs, job opportunities, and other resources.

“It is professionally done and contains all the key information necessary to excite someone about the career field,” says Roger A. Bowles, MS, CBET, associate professor of Biomedical Equipment Technology at Texas State Technical College in Waco, TX. “It also has quotes from practicing BMETs adding credibility to the message and bringing a face to a profession that very few people know anything about.”

“I think it will be quite helpful to BMETs, educators, counselors, and others interested in recruiting individuals into this rewarding career field,” Bowles says.

If you are interested in obtaining a copy or copies of the brochure, please e-mail Steve Campbell, AAMI’s vice president of communications, at scampbell@aami.org. Please include your complete mailing address and the number of copies that you would like to receive.

This career brochure is the most recent accomplishment of the TMC, which was formed by the AAMI Board in 2004 to represent the interests of BMETs, clinical engineers, and other medical technology professionals. Over the last year, the TMC has made significant progress in addressing several major priorities. For a complete list of TMC accomplishments and ongoing projects, visit www.aami.org/tmc.
