1. What is a PDF?
Portable Document Format (PDF) is used when documents have to look exactly the same across all computer platforms and browsers. IRS tax forms, CD software instructions are examples of pdf applications. PDF files are compact and can be viewed by anyone with free Acrobat Reader software. Some of its features include:
- Acrobat Reader's navigation and zoom features enable closer review of PDF file text and images, even within your browser!
- PDF files can be easily viewed and printed a page at a time.
- PDF files contain all the original page layouts, typography, color and graphics.
- PDF allows keyword searching when viewing inside the Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer window.
- PDF files preserve complex page formatting and layout, typography and graphics. The document viewed is identical in format, regardless of the platform that created the PDF document, or on which the PDF document is viewed.
- PDF viewers also allow searching and printing of the document
2. How to open a PDF:
To open a pdf document, just click on the file name. Once the document is open, you can print the document by selecting the printer icon or File > Print.
3. How to save a PDF to your hard drive:
- For Acrobat right click the link to the document.
- In IE, right click on the link and select the option "Save Target As"
- If the document is open in Acrobat Reader, use the acrobat toolbar, press the disk icon (next to the print icon).
4. Check the version - 6.0 or higher is needed
You need Version 6.0 or later to read many of our documents. If you get an error when trying to bring up a PDF file, open up the Adobe Acrobat Reader program and look at the version number on the opening screen . The latest version is available for download from Adobe at no cost.
5. Tips on Reading PDF files
- Notice the icon change during your viewing. Normally, the icon is a hand. The icon changes to a hand with a "w" when the cursor goes over a web link.
- Often there are bookmark links on the left hand side of the document. You can use these links to navigate the document.
- Click the - or + button on the tool bar to hange magnification for a better view.
- Click on the binocular icon on the tool bar to search for a specific phrase or word.
