Biography

Mr. Bryanne Patail was born in Rangoon, Burma (now Yangon, Myinmar). In 1962, he came to the United States, where he studied Biology and Medical Laboratory Technology. While working as a registered medical technologist at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he became interested in the design and principles of operation of automated Chemistry and Hematology analyzers. This led him to pursue further studies in Physics, Electronics, and Biomedical Technology. Upon graduation, in 1972, as a Biomedical Engineering Technologist, he worked with Detroit Osteopathic Hospital Corporation (DOHC, now Horizon Health Systems) where he opened and managed one of the first in-house Clinical Engineering Departments in Southeast Michigan. In 1987, he became the Department Director of William Beaumont Hospital’s Biomedical Engineering Department.

Bryanne joined the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) in 1974, where he served on the Board of Directors for two years. He also served on various committees including the Education Committee and the Infant Incubator Standards Committee. He has served as Co-chair for the 1983 AAMI mid-year meeting in Detroit, Michigan, and the 1986 AAMI annual meeting, in Chicago, Illinois.

Bryanne is a founding member of the Michigan Society for Clinical Engineering, and served as its President for two years. As a member of the Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD), he has served on the Emerging Technologies Board and was the Secretary, Vice-chair and Chair of the Affiliate Council of the ESD.

He is a charter member of the American College of Clinical Engineering (ACCE), where he served as Treasurer for two terms and Vice President for one term. In 2004 he was inducted as Fellow of ACCE. He is also a member of IEEE and ASHE.

In 2001, Bryanne joined the National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS), in Ann Arbor, Michigan. NCPS is a staff department of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) in the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. In the capacity of Biomedical Engineer at the Center, his responsibilities include:

  • Identifying and coordinating biomedical engineering related patient safety issues, so as best to manage the associated risk for the VHA and its patients.
  • Serve as liaison, on behalf of the Director, with internal and external groups regarding VHA patient safety issues.
  • Serve as a consultant to the product standardization users groups of various medical devices, supplies and systems to promote patient safety in procurement decisions.
