| Biography | Carol Davis-Smith is a Sr. Consultant in Premier Consulting Solutions practice with responsibility for the development and delivery of capital lifecycle management processes and tools to Premier members. Selected Experience Ms. Davis-Smith has worked as a clinical engineer for over 16 years in not-for-profit health systems and at Premier. She has provided support in all areas of capital lifecycle management, with expertise in clinical engineering management, technology assessment, and capital contracting. Before joining the consulting practice, Carol worked with Premier's field force to develop and implement the IDN-based capital specialist role. In addition to direct member support, she provided ad hoc support to other Premier field force representatives. Carol joined Premier in June 1996 as a senior specialist in the Technology Assessment program. Her responsibilities included evaluating trends and current technology in the fields of critical care, cardiology, medical lasers, and general biomedical equipment. Additional activities included medical equipment planning, procurement contract evaluation, and technical specification development for capital equipment purchases. Carol was the manager for clinical/biomedical services in Premier's Technology Assessment program. As such, she managed the support provided by four technology specialists to Premier owners and staff. Before joining Premier, Ms. Davis-Smith was a clinical engineering manager at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children's Hospital (BJC Health Systems, St. Louis, MO). Her activities included participation on construction design & development teams; development and expansion of comprehensive support programs; investigation of new areas of support; and administration of technician training and development. Carol began her work with BJC Health Systems at Barnes Hospital in July 1990. As the staff clinical engineer, she participated on construction design & development teams; provided clinical and auxiliary system layout and installation; participated in technical support program development and start-up; served as the medical laser safety officer for Barnes & Jewish Hospitals; and provided technical and clinical support through pre-purchase equipment evaluations and coordination of ongoing user training. Education and Affiliations Ms. Davis-Smith received a B.S. in bioengineering technology from the University of Dayton and an M.S. in engineering from the University of Arizona. She is a certified clinical engineer and a member of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), and the current vice-chair of their Technology Management Council. Over the past 16 years, she has presented and published papers on a variety of clinical engineering and capital contracting topics. |
