Features High Resolution Graphics of Medical Device Symbols

Manufacturers can now access and print more than 640 standardized graphical symbols and safety signs for medical equipment. The symbols have been consolidated into a special clip art CD, available from AAMI.

The CD was developed to enable manufacturers to easily include appropriate international symbols on their products, product packaging, and product support materials.

Medical Equipment Symbols and Safety Signs includes symbols from Graphical Symbols for electrical equipment in medical practice (ANSI/AAMI/IEC TIR 60878:2003), which updates the 1988 edition of the IEC technical document by incorporation of more symbols and the inclusion of safety signs. In addition, a new grouping system was adopted in the IEC document, separating the items into 23 application areas instead of five sections.

The CD also includes symbols from Medical devices-Symbols to be used with medical device labels, labeling, and information to be supplied (ANSI/AAMI/ISO 15223-1:2007), which contains 31 symbols that apply to a broad number of medical devices.

Medical Equipment Symbols and Safety Signs features high resolution versions of each symbol and safety sign in several formats, allowing for broad application and scalability. Also included on the CD are complete copies of the two guidance documents in PDF format.

Each application area contains an overview of the symbols in that area as well as a detailed section that provides images of the graphics, titles, descriptions, and specific notes for application on medical electrical equipment.

The CD collection includes every symbol and sign in the technical information report in EPS, TIF, and JPEG formats, labeled by symbol number with thumbnail views available for easy identification. Because the symbols are high resolution and vector graphics, they can be scaled to nearly any size without a loss in image quality.
