UL Increases Support for Scholarships as Fund Inches Toward $300k Mark
When the plea for financial support for the AAMI Foundation’s Scholarship Fund went out last fall, UL (Underwriters Laboratory) was among the first to respond. And that came as no surprise.
Since the scholarship program was
founded in 2009, UL has become its biggest
financial supporter—donating $15,000 to
date—which has helped provide scholarships
to students seeking careers as biomedical
equipment technicians and clinical
engineers.
UL supports the scholarship program because the AAMI Foundation and UL share similar missions, says Anil Patel, vice president and general manager of UL’s Life and Health Business Unit.
“UL’s Health Sciences industry team provides the services that help manufacturers place safer medical devices on the market, aligning with the AAMI Foundation’s primary mission,” says Patel. “UL’s definition of safety is evolving and we are looking at a broader scope of safety issues that include the usability of devices, the interoperability of devices, software safety, indoor air quality, and more.”
Thanks to the generous support of UL and countless others, the AAMI Foundation Scholarship Program has generated more than $290,000 as of Dec. 5.
The recent donations help inch the program closer to achieving its $500,000 goal, and fund the two $2,500 scholarships awarded each year to students pursuing a career in the healthcare technology management field.
