Four Honorees Set the Standard in Standards Development

Healthcare technology standards development is at the heart of AAMI’s mission, and it takes hundreds of dedicated experts to staff the association’s more than 100 technical committees and working groups.

This year, four individuals stood out from the crowd,earning them an AAMI Standards Developer Award.

The recipients are:

  • Nancy Chobin, CEO of Sterile Processing Universityand a sterilization and reprocessing consultant, for her leadership and contributions to the development of ANSI/AAMI ST91, the “gold standard” for endoscope reprocessing, and other documents that have increased worldwide understanding of device reprocessing.
  • Kelly Coleman, a distinguished scientist and technical fellow at Medtronic where he serves as the chief toxicologist, for co-directing an international in vitro irradiation round-robin validation study that formed the basis of the new ISO 10993-23 standard on irradiation testing of medical devices.
  • Conor Curtin, an independent expert, for his more than 25 years of service to the advancement of standards related to medical devices and technologies used in renal care, as well as medical device alarms, small-bore connectors, electrical safety, human factors, interoperability, and information technology.
  • John Kowalski, president and principal consultant for microGAMMA, LLC, for the development of the VDmax method for substantiating a radiation sterilization dose, which has been incorporated into several international standards.
