Expo Draws Large Crowd Hungry to See Medical Device Innovations

Toward the center of the Convention Center in Long Beach, a crowd would begin to assemble at certain times each day, eager to descend the escalators, enter a vast hall, and see something new.

They were headed to the Expo at the AAMI Annual Conference, the place where nearly 200 vendors displayed the latest in medical devices, technology, and services.

On the vast floor, a wide array of colorful booths competed for attention as some of the world’s leading medical device manufacturers showed off their innovations and products.

Larson Holyoak, a clinical engineering director with Intermountain Healthcare, said he’s been working in the field for 30 years, but this year marked his first AAMI conference, and the displays impressed him.

“I’m seeing a lot of imaging stuff here,” said Holyoak, shaking his head in amazement. “I had no idea there were so many different imaging companies.”

Loretta Dorn, a registered nurse with Baxter Healthcare Corporation, said the displays brought into vivid relief just how technical the delivery of healthcare has become. “These exhibits really reinforce it,” she said.

The exhibitions covered a variety of products and services, including ergonomic mobile carts, real-time location system software technology, patient cables, medical computer systems, monitors, ultrasound machines, simulation products, sterilization equipment, infusion pumps, endoscopes, sensors, and analyzers.

Brian Mullins, a BMET III with the UCLA Medical Center, said the exhibits served as a kind of lesson on what’s on the market. “It’s a refresher for me, and I enjoy it,” he said.
