There’s nothing like a nice surprise to get your day off to a good start. Just ask Rose Seavey, a veteran sterile processing professional and active AAMI standards committee member.

Seavey was sitting in the front row at the recent Annual Conference of the International Association of Healthcare Central Sterile Materiel Management (IAHCSMM), as President Bruce Bird described the winner of the 2013 Award of Honor. The more Bird spoke, the more it sounded as if the award winner would be Seavey. And sure enough, she was.

“It was a total surprise. I was actually speechless, and that’s something that does not come easy to me,” Seavey joked.

Chosen by IAHCSMM’s Executive Board, the award recognizes a sterile processing professional who currently is not working in a facility, but who is making a difference in the profession. Seavey is the president and chief executive officer of Seavey Healthcare Consulting and formerly the director of the Sterile Processing Department at The Children’s Hospital of Denver. She has served on the Board of Directors at the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and is a member of several AAMI working group committees that are developing recommended practices. She is a co-chair of AAMI ST/WG 43, Hospital steam sterilizers, and is also author of AAMI’s popular manual—Sterile Processing in Healthcare Facilities: Preparing for Accreditation Surveys.

“It is a real honor to be recognized by my colleagues who are out there every day working to make patient care safer,” Seavey said. “Receiving this award is definitely one of the greatest highlights of my professional career. I will remember the moment I realized the award was going to me for the rest of my life.  I am not alone in receiving this award. I share it with my mentors, colleagues, and friends who have helped numerous times over the years. Together we are literally saving patients’ lives by sharing our knowledge and expertise.  A big thank you to the board of IAHCSMM.”
