Systems Engineering Symposium to Shed
Light on Healthcare Challenges
Adopting a Lean approach to improving systems engineering (SE) visibility in a large operational system and influencing colleagues and healthcare decision makers about SE are just two hot topics to be discussed at the 2013 INCOSE International Symposium scheduled for June 24-27 in Philadelphia.
INCOSE, which stands for International Council on Systems Engineering, is a not-for-profit organization that promotes international collaboration in SE practice, education, and research, and has more than 8,000 members worldwide, according to its website.
During the INCOSE event, the Biomedical & Healthcare Working Group will host a number of sessions, including a roundtable on SE challenges. AAMI is a participating organization for the event. Other organizations that are expected to participate are GE Healthcare, Medtronic, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Partners Healthcare, and Philips.
AAMI has taken a leading role in promoting SE principles in healthcare technology, which are often not taken into consideration by hospitals and related facilities. Indeed, as was noted at the AAMI-FDA Interoperability Summit last October, “Healthcare has become a complex, sprawling enterprise that is failing to take advantage of the salient disciplinary expertise to design and manage it: systems engineering.”
SE also will be a discussion topic at the AAMI 2013 Conference & Expo, June1-3 in Long Beach, CA. INCOSE’s Meaghan O’Neil, will be leading a session titled “Understanding and Applying Systems Engineering to Healthcare System Problems” at the conference.
