AAMI Seeks Volunteers for Committees,
Boards, Working Groups
Deadlines are rapidly approaching to nominate either yourself or a colleague for a number of AAMI volunteer opportunities. AAMI has a wide array of opportunities available—from serving on various committees and working groups to joining an editorial board:
- Join AAMI’s Technology Management Council (TMC), a 24-member committee that represents the interests of biomedical equipment technicians, clinical engineers, and other healthcare technology management (HTM) professionals. In 2013, the TMC will tackle issues ranging from benchmarking, access to service manuals and other ‘supportability’ issues, and the aging of the profession, among other topics. AAMI members interested in serving a three-year term should send their resume to Patrick Bernat at pbernat@ aami.org by Feb. 15. For more information on the TMC, visit www.aami.org/tmc/index.html.
- Want to help HTM professionals obtain the news, research, and information they need? Then become a member of the BI&T Editorial Board. You’ll play an instrumental role in peer reviews, writing articles, suggesting topics, and recruiting authors. Members serve three-year terms and may be renominated for a second term. Interested AAMI members should send their resumes to Sean Loughlin at sloughlin@aami.org by March 15.
- Last fall, AAMI and UL (Underwriters Laboratories) announced they were jointly developing a suite of standards on medical device interoperability. The development of the AAMI/UL 2800 family of standards will be through a consolidated process, incorporating standards development procedures that have been accredited by the American National Standards Institute. AAMI and UL are inviting all interested stakeholders to participate in the standards development process, which will start soon. Interested stakeholders should apply to Mr. Warren Casper of UL via e-mail at Warren.Casper@ul.com or by phone at (919) 549-1543 before March 15.
- AAMI is also looking for members to join a number of working and task groups.

- SM/WG 01/TG 02, Software Assurance Case Task Group
- SM/WG 01/TG 03, Software Defect Classification Task Group

- CP, Combination Products Working Group
If you would like to nominate yourself or another expert for one or more working or task groups, please e-mail Hillary Woehrle at HWoehrle@aami.org by Feb. 28.
- Join the U.S. BMET Board of Examiners, an 18-member committee that develops the certification exams for biomedical equipment technicians, radiology equipment specialists, and laboratory equipment specialists. The board also oversees the International Certification Commission’s certification renewal program, which includes more than 7,000 individuals. Members serve a three-year term and must attend two meetings per year. The board conducts its business by e-mail and via conference calls throughout the year. HTM professionals interested in sharing their experience and knowledge should send their resume and a letter describing their interest to Iman Hannon at ihannon@aami.org by March 15.
- Want to help select the educational content offered at AAMI’s Annual Conference? Join the AAMI Annual Conference Program Committee and help shape the future of HTM educational offerings. With two-year terms and one meeting per year, this is a great opportunity to get your feet wet as an AAMI volunteer. You’ll work with the committee to review and select topics from the call for proposals, as well as brainstorm ideas for potential areas of focus to be discussed at the conference. Contact Chris Dinegar for further details at cdinegar@aami.org.
