AHA, NPSF Seek Healthcare Leaders for Safety Fellowship

The American Hospital Association (AHA) and the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) are seeking applicants for the 2013-2014 AHA-NPSF Comprehensive Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship.

Program participants will work to expand their knowledge of patient safety science and evidence-based approaches to preventing harm while learning how to lead improved teams within their organizations.

The year-long fellowship program is designed for clinical teams and leaders dedicated to improving quality and patient safety results.  The curriculum is based on the 2009 paper “Transforming Healthcare: A Safety Imperative” from the Lucien Leape Institute of NPSF.  Faculty include representatives from Kaiser Permanente, the University of Michigan Health System, and Baylor Health Care System.

During the program, fellows will design and complete a major patient safety or quality improvement project at their organizations; attend four in-person learning retreats;  participate in three 90-minute webinars; and interact with each other and the faculty in a virtual environment.

Candidates should have training and experience and/or demonstrated interest in developing and implementing patient safety initiatives.  Preference is given to teams of fellows from the same organization.

Upon acceptance into the program, tuition is due June 1. The cost is $14,500 per person per organization. There is a group rate of $13,000 per person when two or more people from the same organization attend.

AHA and NPSF cosponsor the fellowship in partnership with the Health Research & Educational Trust, the Health Forum, the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management, the American Organization of Nurse Executives, and the Society of Hospital Medicine.  The program is entering its 12th year.

The deadline to apply is March 15, and international applicants are welcome. Potential applicants can find out more about the program at www.ahafellowships.org.
