Date Announced for 2013 ’Lollapalooza of Health IT’

Engineers, vendors, and information technology architects with a love for interoperability in healthcare solutions can be expected to flock to Chicago next year for the North American Connectathon 2013.

First held in 1999, the annual Connectathon is run by the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE), a not-for-profit organization that serves as a voice for U.S. health information technology (IT) interests and promotes standards-based interoperability. Next year’s event is scheduled for Jan. 28-Feb. 2.

Participants will test interoperability products against real-world clinical scenarios to determine if they work, according to the IHE. For example, they could test the ability of a system to retrieve patient information or how it shares documents and images.

The Connectathon will also feature a one-day conference on Jan. 30 to provide networking and educational opportunities focused on interoperability.

Last year’s Connectathon had more than 120 participating organizations. IHE says manufacturers have come to value it for their “product development plans.” It was called the “Lollapalooza of Health IT” by James St. Clair, director of interoperability and standards for the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), a health IT organization based in Chicago, IL, in an article in Health Data Management magazine.

“The Connectathon continues its substantial year-to-year growth as the benefits of interoperability, where health information systems work together and share information across organizational boundaries to improve healthcare delivery, become more evident,” IHE says.

Registration opens in August. For more information, click here.
