AAMI Publications Honored for Excellence

Building on a winning year for its publications, AAMI has snagged three more awards in a competition that recognized both editorial content and graphic design.

AAMI’s monthly newsletter, AAMI News, bimonthly peer-reviewed journal, BI&T (Biomedical Instrumentation & Technology), and a media kit were each honored with APEX Awards for Publication Excellence.

AAMI News received an award for its profile of pacemaker pioneer Earl Bakken. The profile, which appeared in the September 2011 issue, detailed Bakken’s remarkable life from his creation of the first battery-powered pacemaker in 1957 to a commitment to spiritual healing after retiring and moving to Hawaii.

BI&T received an award for the cover story “Medical Robotics Come to Life,” which appeared in the September/October 2011 issue. The story detailed the increase of robotically assisted surgery systems and what it means for the medical technology industry.

The 2012 Advertising Media Planner also received an award. The media kit was developed to promote advertising options online and in AAMI’s various publications.

“The awards underscore the interest in healthcare technology management,” said Sean Loughlin, AAMI’s director of publications. “There are fascinating stories to tell about the sweeping changes in healthcare today, the professionals who purchase and maintain medical devices, and the manufacturers behind that technology. We’re determined to shine a light on the work they do in making medical technology safe and effective.”

The APEX awards come on the heels of another publications honor for AAMI. In May, the America Society of Healthcare Publication Editors (ASHPE) bestowed the bronze award for best publication redesign to BI&T, which unveiled its new look last year. All AAMI publications underwent a similar transformation as part of an overall branding effort.

AAMI, the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, is a nonprofit organization founded in 1967. It is a diverse community of nearly 7,000 healthcare technology professionals united by one important mission—supporting the healthcare community in the development, management, and use of safe and effective medical technology.
