AAMI 2012 Annual Conference & Expo Opens

With a focus on wireless challenges, patient safety, and other issues in healthcare technology,  the AAMI 2012 Annual Conference & Expo kicked off this morning in Charlotte, NC.

An estimated 1,500 healthcare technology management (HTM) professionals will attend three days of educational presentations, meetings, and exhibits, learning about cutting-edge medical devices and workplace strategies. The planned events are only part of the conference’s appeal, as the gathering offers HTM professionals a prime opportunity to share tips with peers and learn about new career opportunities.

“I’m most excited about the opportunity to network with fellow clinical engineers from around the country,” said Angie Baltz, a clinical engineer with Clinical Technology Services at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR, who is attending for the first time.

AAMI has a new annual conference app to enhance that networking experience. The app, which allows attendees to set their own personal schedule, features an active Twitter feed with the latest tweets about the conference. This makes it easier for attendees to join the online conversation using the hashtag #AAMI2012.

A new track has been added this year with sessions focusing on wireless challenges, such as network security. Attendees can learn how to set up a wireless testing lab, and get tips on managing a wireless network.

In a keynote speech set for today, Daniel Kraft, MD, a scientist, inventor, and entrepreneur, is expected to talk about new and emerging technologies, and the implications for healthcare.

Many popular features are back, such as a two-part session on Sunday featuring George Mills, director of The Joint Commission’s Engineering Department. Mills is set to update attendees on commission activities, and hold an extensive question and answer session.

Meanwhile, more than 150 vendors will show off their latest products and innovations in a sprawling exhibit hall.

Recruiters are also on hand at the Career Center, which has resources for those looking to advance in their careers and those looking for tips on how to do their jobs better.

Rolena McGee, area manager for Crest Services in Coppell, TX, said during one of the morning sessions that she is very excited about "the ability to catch different seminars and learn about what is going on in the field. This way you get to see what everyone is doing."
