FDA Names CDRH Director


Jeffrey E. Shuren, MD, has been named the director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH).

Jeffrey E. Shuren, MDShuren has served as the acting director of CDRH since September 2009, taking over after the resignation of Dan Schultz, MD.

Since his appointment to acting director, Shuren began a comprehensive review of many programs and processes and set in motion a strategic planning process. He also prioritized the support of innovation in medical devices, the modernizing of device safety efforts, and the strengthening of important internal procedures.

Prior to becoming acting director, Shuren was a neurologist and a lawyer who had been with FDA for 10 years. His previous assignments within FDA include acting deputy commissioner for policy, planning, and budget, and special counsel to the principal deputy commissioner.

Shuren will be speaking at the AAMI/FDA International Conference on Medical Device Standards and Regulation which takes place March 9-10, 2010 in Reston, Virginia.
