NFPA 99 to Return to Committee
The Standards Council of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) voted on August 6 to return a major update to NFPA 99: Standard for Health Care Facilities, back to committee.
The decision affirms a vote taken by NFPA membership in June to return the standard to technical committee.
NFPA members were concerned about issues such as features of fire protection, including sprinklers. The Standards Council concluded that there was adequate support for the decision to return NFPA 99 to committee.
The update to NFPA 99 will now be processed through a full 2011 revision cycle without a call for new public proposals. The technical committee behind the standard will reconsider and act on all public proposals previously filed, and file a new report on proposals and a new report on comments, according to a document outlining the Standards Council’s decision.
If the revised standard receives approval from NFPA membership and the Standards Council, it will be published in September 2011, says Rich Bielen, the staff liaison for NFPA 99.
