FDA Device Director Steps Down
The director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) resigned on August 11.
Daniel Schultz, MD, who has served as director since 2004, has stepped down, according to an e-mail from FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg to FDA staff.
Jeff Shuren, MD, will serve as acting CDRH director. He is a neurologist and lawyer, and has been with FDA for 10 years. A nationwide search will be conducted for a permanent director.
Hamburg praised Schultz’s achievements that he made during his tenure. “Under Dan’s leadership, CDRH enhanced our understanding of the risks and benefits of using medical devices in pediatric populations, and increased the agency's safety efforts by expanding MedSun.”
