FDA Seeks Boost in Budget

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is requesting a budget of $3.2 billion as part of President Obama’s fiscal year 2010 budget, with 166.4 million going towards improving the safety of medical devices and drugs.

If granted, the budget would be a 19 percent increase of the current FDA fiscal year budget.

The budget includes $166.4 million towards targeted resources to improve the safety of human and animal drugs, medical devices, vaccines, blood, and other medical products.

The initiative includes $46.6 million in new user fees for generic drug review, and new fees to re-inspect medical product facilities that fail to meet safety standards. The FDA is also requesting a $4.5 million increase in inflationary and other authorized increases for user fees that support FDA review of applications for new medical devices.
