Senate Confirms Sebelius as HHS Secretary

The U.S. Senate confirmed Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius on April 28 by a vote of 65-31 as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Sebelius is currently in her second consecutive term as governor and cannot run for a third. She was an early supporter of President Obama’s presidential campaign, according to the Associated Press.

She will play a large part in the reform of the healthcare system that Obama is pushing. That reform will impact the medical technology field as well. Obama set a goal to have all medical records computerized by 2014.

Obama previously nominated former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle. The former senator from South Dakota pulled out after a controversy on unpaid back taxes emerged.
