The VA National Center for Patient Safety was established in 1999 to develop and nurture a culture of safety throughout the Veterans Health Administration. NCPS' goal is the nationwide reduction and prevention of
inadvertent harm to patients as a result of their care. The program is unique in health care: NCPS focuses on prevention, not punishment, developing health care solutions based on a systems approach problem solving.

NCPS has a strong professional connection with AAMI: staff members have earned prestigious AAMI awards, served on the board and on standards committees, and have been co-chairs of annual and regional AAMI meetings.
