Enemy at the Gates: Security for Medical Devices
Medical devices have historically been designed keeping safety and efficacy rather than security in mind. A series of public demonstrations of critical security vulnerabilities in infusion pumps and ICDs have shown how susceptible devices, currently on the market, are to targeted attacks. As the industry moves towards interoperability and the “network of devices” paradigm, security problems are expected to magnify since medical devices, as we know them, have not been designed with networked ability in mind. In the future, not only will there be more device-specific attacks, but also generic platform-based attacks where the plug-and-play device interoperability infrastructure will be the target.
In this webinar, Dr. Arnab Ray, who for the past three years has worked with FDA on a National Science Foundation-sponsored project on device software safety and security, provides a brief survey of recent exploits on devices, looks at attack pathways for medical devices, and advocates a more structured consideration of security as a design-driver for medical devices with an explicit documentations of trade-offs.
