Becoming an AAMI Faculty Member: The Details
Eligibility:
Industry professionals, government employees, and education professionals can become an AAMI Faculty Member, in accordance with the minimum requirements outlined below:

- Experience: Five (5) years' related experience in an FDA regulated industry, three (3) of which must be with the medical device industry.
- Industry Knowledge: Appropriate level of technical knowledge of the Quality System regulation and related industry standards, gained through a combination of education and professional experience.
- Attendance at an AAMI Quality Systems Training Program: Participation in at least one (1) course will give applicants the opportunity to become familiar with the content and format of AAMI’s training. For those who wish to teach the Quality System overview course, passing the exam is mandatory.
Eligibility Waiver:
At the discretion of the AAMI Faculty Review Panel, eligibility requirements can be waived should other factors demonstrate competence of industry knowledge and best practices.
If you are employed: It is important that your employer support your participation as an AAMI faculty member. Therefore, we strongly suggest that you notify your employer that you may be asked to instruct a minimum of two (2) public courses annually.
Detailed Application Process:
- Complete the Prospective Faculty Application Form.
- Submit the following to AAMI by November 30, 2012:
- Completed Prospective Faculty Application Form
- Your resume/CV
- Reference letter (desired but optional)
Important: The Application Form must be complete and your resume/CV must accompany the form in order to be forwarded for consideration.
- AAMI staff will confirm receipt of your application within five (5) business days.
- Your application and resume/CV will be forwarded to the AAMI Faculty Review Panel. The review period will take thirty (30) days. You will be notified of your acceptance status within fourteen (14) days after completion of the review process.
- If accepted, you will be invited to a two (2) day train-the-trainer session on March 21-22, 2013 to complete the training portion of the program.
Earning Faculty Status:
- Register for the Train-the-Trainer Session: Once your Prospective Faculty Application has been approved and you are notified of acceptance, you must register and attend an AAMI train-the-trainer session. The first session will be held on March 21-22, 2013.
- This program will be limited to 15 individuals on a first-come first-served basis. If you are unable to attend, your application will be held until the next scheduled session later in 2013.
- Attendance is mandatory to earn faculty status.
Training Overview
The two day train-the-trainer session includes:
- Instruction and assistance on adult learning principles and presentation skills from experienced professionals involved in designing, developing, and teaching AAMI training programs;
- A train-the-trainer notebook including sample modules, faculty guidelines, and other materials;
- Breakfast, lunch, and breaks for two days; and
- A group dinner on the first night of the train-the-trainer program.
After you have successfully completed the train-the-trainer session, AAMI staff will work with you to schedule your first teaching experience at a public course. You will instruct a section of the course along with more experienced faculty members. At the conclusion of the course, participants are asked to provide feedback on the presentation skills and knowledge of the faculty. Based on feedback results from fellow faculty, AAMI staff, and participants at the public course, individuals are either formally approved as an AAMI Faculty Member or as a Faculty Trainee (should additional coaching be needed). Trainees will only be permitted to instruct a public courses until formally approved as an AAMI Faculty Member, at which time they are also eligible to teach privately-held courses within client companies.

As an AAMI Faculty Member AAMI will:
- Provide you with a pre-agreed upon honoraria for teaching based on your experience as an AAMI Faculty member. (NOTE: AAMI Faculty Trainees receive a trainee honorarium until approved as “experienced” by AAMI.)
- Reimburse you for travel, lodging, and incidental expenses associated with the training and according to AAMI travel reimbursement policies.
- Ask you to sign a faculty agreement letter outlining the terms of the teaching assignment and agreed upon honoraria.
- Work with you when scheduling your time for instruction. AAMI will not schedule you for any instruction without your consent.
- To the best of its ability, provide you with feedback, updates to course materials, and any information pertinent to AAMI courses and that will have an impact on your instruction.
- Send an electronic Faculty Newsletter to you alerting you to general information about AAMI courses.
As an AAMI Faculty Member, you will be expected to:
- Comply with and abide by the AAMI copyright, travel, and instructional rules, policies, and procedures.
- Provide AAMI with leads or requests for courses that companies would like AAMI to provide on a private basis.
- Disclose any conflict of interest that you may have that would have an impact on AAMI courses or your instruction.(Disclosure does not necessarily mean you would be disqualified as an AAMI faculty member. Certain legal policies, however, require that you disclose any information that would imply a conflict of interest.)
- Sign the faculty agreement.
Additional Considerations:
- Earning faculty status only permits individuals to teach at AAMI sponsored programs.
- AAMI cannot guarantee the number of teaching assignments in any given year.
- All AAMI course and training materials are copyrighted. Use or reprinting of these materials is strictly forbidden without AAMI’s prior written consent. However, nothing shall preclude an instructor from using his/her ideas, concepts, or general knowledge, skills or expertise in other speaking or teaching activities.
