Alarm Management: What Are the Issues and What Are the Solutions?

In October, 2011, a group of 300 individuals from hospitals, medical device manufacturers, the FDA, academia, and other stakeholders came together at the AAMI/FDA Medical Device Alarms Summit to establish a plan of action to identify, prioritize and reduce issues associated with medical device alarms. In this two-part session, you will learn about the outcomes from the summit, activities since the event, and the important issues that have been uncovered regarding alarm safety.

Click here to view Part I, which focuses on the need for early warning systems throughout the continuum of care, nursing research on alarm management, smart alarm algorithms, and data fusion that may predict an impending event. (Note, due to a technical issue, the first 4½ minutes of this video has poor sound quality, but rest of the video is not affected.)

Click here to view Part II, which includes an ECRI update on alarm management initiatives, the HTF survey on Alarm Man, IHE and Standards updates on alarm management, an update on secondary alarm management systems, and discussion of tools that allow continuous process improvement of alarm management workflows.
