- A System of Systems: Understanding the Complexities of Today’s Hospital
As medical devices continue to develop in complexity and interact more and more with other devices and hospital networks, the challenge for biomeds and clinical engineers to see the system-wide picture becomes greater. In this session, panelists provide an eye-opening presentation about how the complexities of device-to-device connections and device-to-networks integrations impact the patient, the clinician, and areas far beyond the bedside. They tell you what you need to know about the “system of systems” within your hospital and what you need to communicate to your IT department and C-suite.

- Large-Scale Implementation of Wireless Smart Pumps: Lessons Learned
Many healthcare organizations are evaluating whether to convert to new smart infusion-pump technology or to maintain their current inventory of pumps. In this session, representatives from UC Davis Health System, a large teaching hospital in Northern California, share lessons they learned while installing 1,000 wireless smart pumps throughout their medical centers. They address the product-selection process, wireless infrastructure planning, drug library development/updates, and novel inspection/maintenance strategies. The speakers also outline the collaborative roles of Clinical Engineering/Biomed, IT, Pharmacy, and clinical staff in the implementation.
