About Charlotte
Distinctly cosmopolitan, but with definite hometown appeal, Charlotte offers a special blend of liveliness and comfort. The city pulses with activity, inviting visitors to enjoy a vibrant night life, fine dining, art, music, entertainment, and outdoor recreation.
There are more than 150 restaurants and cafes within walking distance of the convention center. (Prevention magazine has called Charlotte one of the “most walkable cities in America”). If you prefer not to walk, the Gold Rush Shuttle offers free transportation throughout downtown.
For night life, visit the wine bars, jazz bars, and comedy clubs in the Epicenter, the NC Music Factory, and the various “stroll districts” (neighborhood centers of nightlife) around the city.
Charlotte is home to more than a dozen museums, including the NASCAR Hall of Fame, the Mint Museum of Art, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art (including works by notables such as Picasso and Warhol), Discovery Place (one of the top hands-on science centers in the nation), and the Light Factory Contemporary Museum of Photography and Film.
For outdoor recreation, don’t miss the nearby U.S. National Whitewater Center, which features the world’s largest man-made whitewater river, and provides opportunities for whitewater rafting and kayaking — plus miles of hiking and biking trails. You also can soar above the water on a 1,100-foot zip line or try your hand at rock climbing!
The city is a hub for US Airways, making air access convenient and affordable. Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is approximately 7 miles from the convention center. Taxis to/from the airport cost approximately $25.
With a community so rich in captivating culture, colorful cityscapes, and cosmopolitan character, Charlotte is the perfect location for AAMI 2012.
