Abstract

Infusion pumps help critically ill patients, but also create an inherent risk of possible overdoses and underdoses as well. But, over the years, burgeoning technological advances have given way to the new “smart” pump. Through the use of drug libraries, clinicians are able to program specific dosage amounts, which can prevent overdoses. Not only does this increase user confidence, it also improves patient safety. But there are issues with new pumps as well, including their cost and the initial time required to create drug libraries.
