Clinical Engineering Management Committee Projects
The CEMC has developed several books and other resources that have remained among AAMI's best-selling publications for years. They include:
The Medical Equipment Management Manual, which was updated in 2009, provides essential guidance to clinical engineering departments about the Joint Commission’s Standards Improvement Initiative. The book — authored by Robert H. Stiefel, MS, CCE, the chair of the CEMC — serves as a practical guide to help a hospital's medical equipment management program remain in complete and continuous compliance with Joint Commission standards. - Updated in 2008, the Electrical Safety Manual is a mainstay in the clinical engineering field. The manual — authored by Matthew Baretich, PE, PhD and Marvin Shepherd, PE (Safety)—includes the basic elements that should be contained in electrical safety programs and discussions of changing preventive maintenance programs and philosophies. - The CEMC published standardized job descriptions in the clinical engineering field as guidance for CE directors and managers. Please note, these are only available to members. Descriptions are available for the following positions:
- BMET Apprentice/Intern
- BMET I
- BMET II
- BMET III
- BMET Team Leader
- Biomedical Supervisor
- Clinical Engineer
- Clinical Engineering Manager
- Clinical Engineering Director
- Imaging Specialist
The CEMC is working to expand this offering. If you have a position you would like to see included, please e-mail pbernat@aami.org.
- The Uniform Terminology and Taxonomy Initiative, a subcommittee of the CEMC, is working to collect, create, validate, and publish uniform terms and definitions related to adverse events. For more information on this project, please e-mail Patrick Bernat at pbernat@aami.org.
- Computerized Maintenance Management Systems for Clinical Engineering—authored by Ted Cohen, MS, CCE — is designed to provide guidance on computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) in use at hospitals and independent service organizations (ISOs), and an overview of new technologies that are driving future enhancements.
